NEICORD is implementing the PCCP in 18 villages under Babadam area of Rongram Block, located at the Ranggira Hill region of West Garo Hills District of Meghalaya. The inhabitants are mainly Garos (A∙chik) with an approximate population of 3602. Inhabitants of the area are dependant largely on agriculture, horticulture and jhum cultivation for their livelihood.
The Project build on the capacity of the Community-Based Organization (CBO), farmers club and federation on the issues of climate change and their respective responsibilities towards creation care.
The project also introduces improved and sound environmental cultivation practices such as Sloping Agriculture Land technology (SALT), System of Rice Intensification (SRI), composting, organic farming, kitchen garden and improved method of livestock rearing by training the farmers to increase the productivity and manage the natural resources judiciously. The project also trained the farmers on Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR) for the regeneration of the degraded forest
107 community members trained on Creation. These members are adopting the creation care by conducting regular cleaning drive in their respective villages.
The project has trained 146 farmers on sustainable farming out of this 67 farmers trained on SALT, 52 farmers trained on kitchen garden and 27 farmers trained on Livestock by the project. 52 farmers adopted kitchen garden for family nutritional consumption; this practice has helped the families to meet their nutritional requirements in the families even during the lockdown as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
27 farmers adopted Livestock including poultry and piggery as income generating activities.
The project trained 41 farmers from 5 villages on FarmerManaged Natural Regeneration (FMNR) through which 4 forest villages identified and were regenerated.
24 federation members were trained on Creation care and 2 cleaning drive was conducted by the Federation in two villages where 35 federation members participated in the cleaning drive.
36 Animators were selected and trained by the Project staff on Creation care on their roles and responsibilities. These Animators are raising awareness in the community including the youth on environment and care for creation
Apart from that the project formed 18 farmers club and linked them with various line departments to avail training, schemes and credit in carrying out their basic livelihood.
