Meghalaya is basically an agricultural state with about 80% of its population depending entirely on agriculture for their livelihood. Shifting cultivation commonly known as jhum cultivation is one of the most ancient methods of cultivation and has been a popular farming method in Meghalaya. One cycle of jhumming took about 10 to 20 years before the farmers returned to the same plot. The longer cycle is better for restoring soil fertility. However, with an increasing population depending on the same amount of land, the jhumming cycle has been reduced. Such a short period is inadequate to allow ecological recovery. Soil nutrients are lost cumulatively and result in decreased crop productivity. Decreased agricultural productivity leads to food, nutrition and livelihood insecurity in the community. NEICORD implemented the Umsning Food Security Project in Umsning Block in Ri Bhoi District in the State of Meghalaya with the aim to improved the food security (availability, access and utilization) through the promotion of sustainable agriculture and livelihood. We promote and strengthen Farmer Groups, Self-Help Groups and Farmer Producer Organization and link these groups with banks and government for credit and increase access to entitlements. We trained farmers on Sloping Agriculture Land Technology (SALT), System of rice Intensification (SRI), soil conservation, rain water harvesting, kitchen garden, composting, pest management, post-harvest, value addition, marketing and improved method of livestock rearing. We promote healthy behavioural practices among the communities by training them on health, hygiene and nutrition.
